Understanding Healthy Relationships
Recently, our Key Stage 3 pupils took part in a lively and engaging assembly exploring the theme of healthy relationships. Designed to help pupils understand what positive and negative relationship behaviours look like, both in school and in their wider lives, the assemblies were a great success due to the enthusiastic but respectful way our pupils throw themselves into everything and share their ideas.
The focus of the assembly was an interactive game of “Heads Up”, where volunteers came to the front to guess relationship‑related words they couldn’t see, while their peers in the audience offered clues from the audience. The words ranged from positive traits such as trust, respect, and empathy to red‑flag behaviours like jealousy, pressure, and control.
The game generated plenty of laughter and energy, but it also prompted thoughtful discussion about how we treat others — and what we should expect in return. It was fantastic to see each year group participating with enthusiasm, supporting their classmates, and reflecting on the kind of relationships that help them feel safe, respected, and valued. A huge well done to all our volunteers for their confidence and to every pupil for contributing to such a positive week of assemblies.
Meanwhile, Key Stage 4 students took part in an assembly led by David Messenger, the Sexual Health Outreach Lead for our area. The session focused on promoting healthy sexual relationships, with particular emphasis on understanding that pornography does not provide a realistic or healthy representation of real, respectful, and loving physical relationships.
