Scholars Take the Pulse of Careers in Health Care
Last week Year 10 Scholar students attended Northumbria University to gain experience in possible career routes in healthcare. It was an incredibly engaging day which saw students learn about opportunities at the university including nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy and work supporting doctors in surgery. Students received a lecture and had a tour of the clinical labs…. to their delight in the afternoon they became university students themselves and took part in clinical lab sessions. Students worked with manikins of pregnant women to learn how to deliver a baby!
The delight on their faces as they saw the manikin baby be delivered was amazing. They learnt how midwives can tell the position of a baby and were placed in real life situations having to find out for themselves on manikins. Students worked in the physiotherapy clinic, working with wheelchairs and used a very expensive machine which allowed them to analyse human anatomy. The last workshop involved students becoming assistant doctors, and dressing up in scrubs. They were so excited by this and were even allowed to take the scrubs home. I have never seen the students laugh and smile as much as today. They were true assets to the school and have allowed us to build a deeper relationship with this amazing university.
