Cosmos in the Classroom
We were delighted to welcome visitors from Kielder Observatory for a special astronomy experience with our students. Located within Kielder Water and Forest Park, the observatory sits in the vast Northumberland International Dark Sky Park—one of the largest protected dark sky areas in Europe, covering nearly 580 square miles. During the visit, students enjoyed an immersive session inside an inflatable observatory, where they explored stunning skyscapes, constellations and planetary views similar to those visible in the park’s famously dark skies.
Alongside the interactive experience, students also took part in a short classroom presentation explaining the important work carried out at the observatory. They learned about the types of objects astronomers observe—from distant galaxies to planets—and how dark sky areas help scientists and visitors study the universe more clearly. The visit sparked plenty of curiosity and gave students a fascinating insight into astronomy and the wonders of the night sky.
