Fermi Thinking with Year 9
Our able Year 9 mathematicians visited Newcastle University last week. They were introduced to the work of Enricho Firmi, his involvement in developing the Atomic Bomb, and his work with estimating calculations very accurately. The students worked through everyday problems using common sense in their calculations to estimate solutions. They had to calculate how many suitcases pass through Heathrow in a year, how long it would take to drink an Olympic sized swimming pool of water to how many footballs fit in the room, among other problems.
