World Book Day 2023

We love to celebrate World Book Day at Sandhill View as we recognise the importance of instilling a love of reading within our students. World Book Day is an important date on our school calendar as we relish the opportunity to share our love of books and our favourite stories with the students whilst also finding out which books they have enjoyed reading and studying the most. Many of our members of staff get into the World Book Day spirit by coming to school dressed as their favourite character from a story.

This year, the English department dressed up as different characters from the Harry Potter books and the Maths department came to school as different characters from the Minions books.

All students at Sandhill View took part in various World Book Day activities throughout the day. The day began with a World Book Day quiz during form-time and it was filled with questions about popular books and authors as well as books that students have studied at Sandhill View Academy and a SHV Staff Masked Reader round. The winner of each tutor group has been entered into a prize-draw to win a £25 Waterstones voucher or a runner up prize of a free book.

Period 1 kicked off the SHV Travelling Story for all KS3 students. At the beginning of the lesson teachers introduce the short story The Hitchhiker by Roald Dahl. Students then made predictions about what they thought the story could be about and then read the first section of the story. In the next lesson students read the next part of the story and this continued throughout the day at the beginning of every lesson until the story was finished at the end of the day in Period 6.

During break and lunch time students were able to visit the Learning Resource Centre to vote for their favourite staff WBD costume and visit the Book Swap Shop. Over the last couple of weeks both students and staff have donated books that they no longer read to the Book Swap Shop. Students visited the Book Swap Shop and took a book of their choice home to read. We loved hearing the discussions the students had with each other when choosing books and sharing their favourite stories together.

All students can claim a free World Book Day book or as £1 discount off a book of their choice. The tokens can be used at most supermarkets and bookstores and this year are digital. Click here to claim your token.

Well done to Ava Mae Bradley has won the £25 Waterstones voucher for the WBD quiz. Macie McLaughlin and Dylan McEwan are the runners up.

The winner of our staff costume competition were:
Mr Jackson – Best Male Costume
Mrs Patel – Best Female Costume
Maths Department – Maths for the second year running.
