Behind the Match-day Mike
Local sports journalist Nick Barnes recently visited school to deliver an inspiring assembly to students about his career in sports journalism. Nick, who is well known for his work with BBC Radio Newcastle and his long-standing coverage of Sunderland AFC, spoke about his experiences commentating on live football matches, interviewing players and managers, and reporting on major sporting events across the region.
During the assembly, Nick shared insights into the fast-paced world of sports media and explained the skills needed to succeed in the industry, including communication, confidence, teamwork, and a passion for sport. He also gave students valuable advice on how to begin a career in sports journalism, encouraging them to gain experience through writing, podcasting, school media projects, and following current sporting events closely. Students thoroughly enjoyed hearing about his journey and asking questions about life as a sports journalist.
Thank you to Nick for taking the time to speak with our students this week
