This Week in SMSC

The new term has started exceptionally well in terms of our Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development here at Sandhill View. In SMSC lessons there have already been a number of interesting, engaging and mature discussions about topics ranging from puberty, commitment and healthy relationships, through to mental health and the stigma with which it can all too often be associated.

Our new Year 7 cohort has been learning about things like healthy diets, and two students in particular noted that we all “need fats and vegetables to be healthy”, and we must be “hydrated” at all times – well done! In addition, in year 8 this past week, students have learned about the importance of personal hygiene, and there have even been debates about whether it is true that girls take more pride in their appearance! We suspect this one might rumble on for some time…

Years 7 to 9 also participated in workshops with speakers from the Police and the Relationships and Sex Education team, and students have spoken positively about what they can take away from these sessions.

Finally, the academy also recognised Bisexuality Awareness Week this week, and all students had an opportunity to discuss this topic and voice their opinions on it. As usual, SHV pupils did so with the highest levels of maturity and enthusiasm across the school, and one student even commented, “This school encourages us to be who we want to be.”
