What is Sixth Form?
In the UK, there are two main types of Sixth Form: those attached to schools and independent Sixth Form colleges. School-based Sixth Forms allow students to continue their education in the same environment from Year 7 through to Year 13, or to join specifically at Year 12.
These school Sixth Forms typically prepare 16- to 18-year-olds for university entry through qualifications such as A-levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB), Scottish Highers, or the Pre-U. Many also offer BTECs and apprenticeships, and increasing numbers now include the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) as part of their curriculum.
Independent Sixth Form colleges, on the other hand, often provide a broader selection of subjects and qualifications. They usually offer more flexibility, allowing students to choose from a wide variety of subject combinations—sometimes up to 40 A-Level options—alongside the EPQ and various vocational or technical courses.
How Do You Apply?
Schools with an existing Sixth Form typically set minimum GCSE grade requirements for students wishing to continue into Year 12. This may include achieving as many as six A* or A grades (now 7-9 under the current grading system).
For students looking to join a different school’s Sixth Form, the application process usually begins around 18 months before entry. Entry requirements vary between schools, but many are academically selective and highly competitive. Selective Sixth Forms often have a two-stage admissions process, which may include a written or computer-based test followed by a face-to-face interview.
Applications to Sixth Form Colleges are generally due by the summer term before entry—commonly around May. However, some students choose to apply as early as the start of Year 11.
Choosing the Right Sixth Form
When planning for Sixth Form, it’s important to first decide whether you want to pursue A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB), or another qualification like Scottish Highers. Make sure the Sixth Form you’re considering offers the subjects and syllabus you need.
If you have a specific university course or career path in mind, research the subject requirements early. Certain degree programs require specific A-Level or IB subjects, so it’s essential to plan accordingly.
Think carefully about the type of Sixth Form experience you want. Would you prefer to stay at your current school, transfer to a new school, or join an independent Sixth Form College? Some students also consider moving to a boarding school for Sixth Form, especially those transitioning from single-sex to co-educational environments.
It’s worth asking how many students typically stay on into a school’s Sixth Form. A high retention rate can be a good indicator of strong A-Level or IB teaching. Conversely, a very small Sixth Form may suggest limited subject options or weaker academic performance.
Check the academic entry requirements for staying in your current school or moving to a new one. Selective schools may require six or more top grades (A*/A or 7–9) at GCSE for admission to Sixth Form.
Finally, don’t overlook other important factors such as the quality of facilities, extracurricular opportunities, and the strength of the school’s pastoral care. These can significantly impact your overall experience during Sixth Form.
What can you study at Sixth Form
Typically Sixthforms will have a wide range of academic courses available, quite often these are expanded and extended versions of the topics offered at GCSE level especially for school based sixth forms.
Typical examples of the type of things you could study are:
Business, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Drama & Theatre, English Language, English Literature, Film Studies, Fine Art, French, Geography, German, History, Law, Maths, Media Studies, Music, Photography, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, Further Mathematics, Health and Social Care (Single and Diploma award), ICT, Sports & Engineering
