Animal Ingenuity with Zoo Lab
Last Tuesday, KS3 students attended an engaging assembly on biomimicry—the science of learning from nature to solve human problems and design sustainable solutions. They discovered how snake venom has been used to develop blood-thinning medicine, how spider webs inspired the creation of Kevlar, and how the structure of a cockroach led to the design of search-and-rescue drones. Geckos’ feet sparked the invention of reusable gecko tape, and swimsuits modeled on shark skin were so effective they were eventually banned in competition.
To bring the learning to life, students also had the chance to handle some of the animals that inspired these innovations — a hands-on experience that brought science and nature together in a memorable way.
