From Classroom To Clinic
On Monday a group of Year 9 students attended Sunderland University for the day as part of the final ‘Routes into Healthcare’ program. They learnt what they would need to do to study healthcare related courses including medicine at Sunderland University. As part of the day we had a tour of the facilities which were very impressive. We took part in lectures about medicine and were given a problem which we would have to solve throughout the day…. just as a medical student would.
Students took part in an anatomy workshop to help them understand what the symptoms of a patient might be due to. They used a machine which contained transverse images of the inside of a human body and were shown how to identify different organs, tissues, bones and muscles. They then took part in a clinic where they were shown how to examine a patient including listening to the heart, taking blood pressure, oxygen levels, Murphy’s testing and abdominal tests to identify the position and size of the liver. At the end of the day students had to come up with a diagnosis and discuss possible treatments. It was an inspiring day and the students learnt a lot.
Well done Year 9!
