Firefighting Phoenixes
This term, we were proud to offer a group of our Year 10 students a unique and enriching opportunity to take part in the Phoenix Project—a dynamic programme run by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service at Sunderland Central Fire Station.
Over the course of six action-packed days, these young people gained hands-on experience in a variety of areas including firefighting techniques, first aid, teamwork, and communication.
Their final three days culminated in a special ‘passing out’ parade, attended by proud parents and school staff. It was an absolute privilege to witness them, fully suited in firefighting gear, perform a live rescue demonstration from the training fire house.
The strength, determination, and commitment they displayed throughout the programme were truly outstanding. Beyond learning practical skills, each student has developed greater self-awareness, resilience, and the confidence to face and overcome personal challenges — lessons that will serve them well far beyond the fire station.
Our staff thoroughly enjoyed speaking with the proud parents who attended the final ceremony. Their heartfelt praise for the project, its dedicated team leaders, and the school’s involvement was incredibly rewarding to hear.
We couldn’t be prouder of how our students represented Sandhill View. A huge well done to everyone involved!
