Aiming Higher in Maths
On Friday some of our fabulous year 9 students represented Sandhill View at RGS’ Brightsparks program. This event is aimed at inspiring pupils to access maths past GCSE and opening their eyes to some interesting sides of mathematics. Today’s event focused on the mathematics of computing such as binary codes and algorithmic patterns. Pupils learnt about problem abstraction which is the computers process of removing all unnecessary information to come to the simplest conclusion at solving a specific problem, linking with computing at GCSE and beyond. We also then looked at how mathematical modelling is used for simplifying models of bacteria in medicine so that scientists can break down their structures.
The pupils and staff had an amazing day out solving lots of complex problems and had some really great discussions with event organisers, presenting themselves fantastically. Well done!
