Mechanical / Electrical Apprentice
Location: Sunderland Head Office
Qualifications: 3 GCSEs at grade C (or above) or grade 4 (or above) or equivalent in English Language, Mathematics and a Science or 3 standard grades (3 or above) or National 4 or 5 in English Language, Mathematics and a Science.
Contract Type: Fixed Term

The Advanced / Modern Apprenticeship Programme
Our award winning apprenticeship programme is a four year programme, the first three years are spent on the job learning in the depot with an allocated mentor and attending a specialist training college in either Glasgow or Wolverhampton (depending on home location).
You will work towards a ‘Mechelec’ qualification so will be equally skilled in both mechanical and electrical engineering.
The fourth year of the programme has been specially designed by Stagecoach UK Bus to consolidate technical skills by way of attendance at a series of development courses including manufacturer’s technical courses.
After four years you will be fully skilled with a rewarding career ahead of you.
In addition to the academic qualifications the successful applicants must have an interest in engineering, be keen to learn and develop new skills. An interest in technology would be beneficial.
The selection process includes ability tests and an interview.
There are five positions available in Tyne and Wear and applicants may be placed in Sunderland, Newcastle or South Shields.
NHS Apprentice Accountancy Assistant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, dynamic and ambitious individual to join the Financial Services team based at South Tyneside General Hospital. The role is set within a challenging and rewarding environment and would be ideally suited to an individual seeking to pursue a career in finance. It also offers a fantastic opportunity to gain a level 3 qualification that will include the AAT qualification.
The apprenticeship will last approximately 2 years and includes allocated time to attend external training with Sunderland College. Successful applicants will be paid Annex 21 which is an agreed training rate paid at a percentage of the salary band’s maximum for the qualified rate. The successful applicant will train throughout the apprenticeship to provide support to the Accountancy function in the effective provision of Financial Services for the Trust and subsidiary companies, including assisting with the production of financial information in accordance with strict timetables and short deadlines and resolving queries.
Throughout the apprenticeship you will train in the finance team to:
- Ensure control accounts are accurately reconciled covering both debtor and creditor accounts.
- Revolve queries from both internal departments and external organisations relating to the Statement of Financial Position,
- Build relationships with Payroll, Finance Management, Procurement and across the organisation.
Successful candidates must:
- Be able to evidence literacy and numeracy at Level 2 (GCSE grade 4 or above) at interview
- Have good IT skills
- Have a genuine interest in pursuing a career in finance
- Be confident, approachable and organised

An exciting opportunity within Healthcare
We are looking to recruit Apprentice Healthcare Assistants for our Wards and Departments, supporting clinical teams in providing care to patients. Most opportunities are expected to be in adult patient areas.
Applicants will complete a Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship whilst completing vocational training in a hospital setting, earning throughout the apprenticeship. On successful completion of the apprenticeship you will move into a permanent Healthcare Assistant vacancy.
Apprentices will learn the skills and gain competences required to support patient care in our Wards and Departments. Apprentices must demonstrate both a caring and compassionate nature and an ability to work effectively within a team. This apprenticeship will include a variety of shift patterns.
The apprenticeship will last up to 15 months subject to regular reviews to demonstrate progress, and all apprentices in these roles will be expected to successfully complete the Care Certificate training programme within 3 months of appointment. Applicants must have Maths and English at GCSE grade 3 or above.

Gentoo Apprenticeship Opportunities
We have 16 new apprenticeship opportunities – and are holding an open day on Saturday 8 June to find the ideal candidates.
The apprenticeships are in a range of different roles across the business, including housing management, arboriculture, electrical, gas, plumbing and heating engineering, surveying, paralegal, and business administration.
Salaries start at £12,500, which is £5,200 above minimum wage, and increase by an additional £3,000 on successful completion of each year of the two- to four-year apprenticeships. The roles also come with excellent terms and conditions, including 24 days paid holiday (plus bank holidays) and a company pension scheme.
The Group has created 260 apprenticeships in its history, with 90% of apprentices going on to full-time, permanent employment within the business. Amy Kelsey and Harry McMullen joined Gentoo as apprentices in 2017 and have successfully completed formal qualifications as part of their training.
Gentoo’s apprenticeship recruitment day will take place between 10am and 3pm on Saturday 8 June at Akeler House, Doxford International Business Park, Sunderland, SR3 3XR.

Newcastle University is a public research university in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North-East of England. The university can trace its origins to a School of Medicine and Surgery, established in 1834, and to the College of Physical Science, founded in 1871. These two colleges came to form one division of the federal University of Durham, with the Durham Colleges forming the other. The Newcastle colleges merged to form King’s College in 1937. In 1963, following an Act of Parliament, King’s College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Learning Lathe operations – Manual operation of lathes (eg: turning, screw cutting, trepanning).
Understanding how to use a lathe to machine a wide range of different materials (different metals, ceramics and plastics). Learn hand grinding of cutting tools. When fundamental engineering skills have been embedded, progress on to CNC operated lathes using conversational programming techniques to program lathe operations as required.
Learning Milling operations – Manual operation of a milling machine
Understanding correct cutter selection when working on different materials. How to use of a boring head and a dividing head. Learn how to alter machine head position to achieve complex angle milling. Given the vast range of materials to be machined, learn the skills and techniques for machining each type of metal, plastic and ceramic used. When fundamental engineering skills have been embedded, progress on to CNC operated milling machines using conversational programming techniques to program milling operations as required.
Learn to use AutoCad and Inventa – Use drawing packages to construct complex designs and covert these to CNC programs.
Learn Welding Techniques – Weld using a variety of equipment including Tig, Mig, Oxy-Acetylene, Braising and Silver Soldering.
Learn plastic welding techniques for welding plastics such as polypropylene and PVC
Use plasma cutters for various cutting operations.
Fabrication Techniques – Learn how to work with various types of sheet metal
Fabricate various types of enclosures, frames and vessels.
Learn Pipework installation – Learn pipework installation techniques such as bending and forming. Connect up and test various types of pipework systems (metal, plastic).
Surface grinding – Learn how to correctly use a surface grinding machine.
Inspection techniques and fatigue analysis – Understand how to correctly inspect work and installations. Understand fatigue analysis methods and techniques.
Learn fitting and assembly skills – Understand how to fit and assemble a wide range of mechanical and electromechanical components and equipment.
Mechanical and Electromechanical Maintenance – Learn about all aspects of maintenance of mechanical and electromechanical equipment, including preventative maintenance. Learn about maintenance requirements of mechanical systems, including how these systems are linked to the building fabric.
Mechanical and Electromechanical Fault Finding
Learn and develop mechanical and electromechanical fault finding skills and techniques
Gain an understanding of mechanical and electromechanical testing and in both a maintenance and breakdown environment.

- A reasonable level of manual dexterity is required.
