Transition from Primary School – 2016
Hello and a very warm welcome to Sandhill View Academy!
At Sandhill View Academy we know that the transition from primary to secondary school is an extremely important time for students, but we know it can also be challenging and daunting. Throughout the year, we will be organising a series of events to make the transition as straightforward and comfortable as possible for both students and parents.
The Transition Process
After Easter we will write to all of our prospective parents, welcoming you to our school and confirming the details of the transition process.
At Sandhill View Academy our programme of induction includes:
At the end of September we invite all interested pupils and parents to attend our annual Open Evening. Following a presentation from our Head of School, Mr Richard Carr, you will have the opportunity to tour the school and visit each department. If you are unable to attend the Open Evening, visits can be arranged at alternative times. To arrange a visit please call the school on 0191 5616060 to book an appointment.
Throughout the autumn term Mrs Akien, our Director of Transition, will visit each feeder primary school to introduce herself and talk to Year 6 pupils about Sandhill View Academy.
The aim of the visit is to set aside any worries Year 6 pupils may have by talking about what to expect and they will also have the opportunity to ask questions and find out about their exciting new school.
‘Welcome to Sandhill View Academy’ Evening
On Monday 27th June, parents and carers are invited to our “Welcome to Sandhill View Academy Evening”. This is your opportunity as parents to come and see a presentation about the transition process and hear how your child will be taught at Sandhill View Academy. It is also an opportunity to meet key members of staff who will be there to support your child while they take this important milestone.
We will be holding additional open mornings in June and further information about this will be sent to you shortly.
All y6 pupils who have been allocated a place will spend three days at Sandhill View Academy from Monday 11th July to Wednesday 14th July. They will have the opportunity to make new friends and attend new and exciting lessons. Pupils often feel much more confident about the move after they have spent several days in their new school.
Extra Curricular Opportunities
During the year, we run regular after school sessions for year 5 and year 6 students. The experience offered is one of challenge and enrichment and enables students to develop independent learning skills which they will build on once they are in Year 7. Students also have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the school and get to know some of our staff as well as working with pupils from the other primary schools.
